Flower, Pre-Rolls, Vapes, Edibles or Concentrates? Pick Your Format

Every format plays differently — how fast it hits, how long it lasts and how easy it is to dose. Here’s the table, laid out.

Most of the choosing at a dispensary isn’t strain against strain — it’s format against format. How you take cannabis decides how fast it comes on, how long it lasts and how easy it is to get the amount right. Here’s how each card in the deck plays.

Flower

The classic: dried buds you grind and smoke in a joint, pipe or bong, or heat in a dry-herb vaporizer. Effects start within minutes and usually fade over one to three hours, so it’s easy to take a little and stop. The best way to try different strains and learn what you like.

Pre-rolls

Flower that’s already rolled — no grinder, no papers, no skill required. A single is a low-commitment way to try something new; multi-packs of smaller joints make it easy to share or to smoke less at once. Infused pre-rolls add concentrate and hit much harder, so treat them with respect.

Vapes

Cartridges and disposables heat cannabis oil instead of burning plant material. They’re discreet, low-odor and as fast-acting as flower. Live resin and rosin carts keep more of the plant’s original flavor. Buy from licensed shelves only — lab-tested product is the whole point.

Edibles

Gummies, chocolates, drinks and more. No smoke at all, but a slower, longer ride: effects can take up to two hours to arrive and last six hours or more. Easy to dose precisely, easy to overdo if you’re impatient. Start with 2.5–5 mg — our edible dosing guide has the details.

Concentrates

Wax, shatter, badder, rosin, live resin, diamonds — extracts that can be several times stronger than flower. Usually dabbed or vaped. Best left to experienced consumers who know their tolerance.

Tinctures and topicals

Tinctures are drops taken under the tongue or added to food or drink, with an onset somewhere between smoking and eating. Topicals — balms, lotions and patches — are applied to the skin for local relief; most won’t produce a high at all.

New to the table? Flower or a pre-roll lets you feel it fast and stop early; a low-dose edible skips the smoke entirely. Ask a budtender to match the format to the night you have planned.
