Your First Dispensary Visit, Dealt Straight

Never been to a dispensary? Here’s the whole visit, start to finish — what to bring, what to ask, and how to walk out with the right product.

Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel like stepping up to a table where everyone else already knows the rules. Good news: the rules are short, and nobody expects you to know them. Here’s the whole visit, start to finish.

1. Bring a valid ID

You must be 21 or older, and you’ll show a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with your date of birth — a driver’s license, state ID, passport or military ID. It’s checked on every visit, no matter how old you look. No medical card is needed to shop adult-use.

2. Browse before you go

The online menu lists what’s in stock with prices, potency and product details. Looking first — even if you’d rather buy in person — means you arrive with a shortlist instead of a blank stare. Ordering ahead for pickup is the fastest way through the door.

3. Tell the budtender what you’re after

Budtenders are there to help you pick, not to upsell you. The most useful things to share:

  • What you want out of it — relaxing, sleeping, socializing, focusing.
  • How you want to take it — smoking, vaping, eating, or something you don’t inhale at all.
  • Your experience level — first time ever, first time in years, or regular.
  • Your budget — there’s a good option at almost every price.

4. Start with a small hand

For a first purchase, go small: a single pre-roll, a low-dose edible or a gram of flower. You’ll learn what you like without committing to a big bag of something you don’t. With edibles especially, start with 2.5–5 mg of THC and wait at least two hours before taking more. Our format guide lays out how each option plays.

5. Pay and go

You pay at the counter, and your purchase leaves in sealed, child-resistant packaging. Michigan allows adults to buy up to 2.5 ounces per day, no more than 15 grams of it concentrate — far more than a first visit needs.

After you leave

  • Keep it sealed and out of reach while you drive — and never drive high.
  • No consuming in public, in the parking lot or in a vehicle.
  • Store it locked up and away from kids and pets.

Short version: 21+, bring ID, ask questions, start small — and enjoy it at home.
